What are Self-Help Groups?
Self-help groups in Berlin are groups where people with common issues or challenges come together to exchange ideas. They organize these meetings themselves.
There are self-help groups for many different topics in various languages.
Here is a small selection:
- Chronic illnesses (e.g. rheumatism)
- Addiction problems (alcohol, drugs, gambling)
- Mental health problems such as depression and anxiety
- Groups for relatives of people with chronic or mental illnesses
- Social issues (e.g. loneliness, integration, burn-out, miscarriage)
The special thing about self-help groups is that they are not led by professionals such as doctors or therapists. The participants are experts in their own right.

More Specifically...
Self-help groups meet to talk to each other, exchange tips and methods and support each other. Some groups are also active or creative together, play theater, or practice dealing with difficult situations.
Self-help groups are generally open to all people who would like to discuss their topic with other people affected.
The basic prerequisite for a good group atmosphere is respectful interaction with one another.
The groups are completely free to organize their meetings: they decide on the schedule and the topics to be discussed.
What else is important to know?
For many people, attending a self-help group is a good opportunity to exchange ideas and share experiences for personal growth.
Self-help groups do not replace professional support or medical treatment. A self-help group is not the right place for acute crises, especially if you find your symptoms or your challenges worsening. Your local self-help contact point will happily inform you about professional resources.
